Amerks Booster Club website Webmaster BILL FLYNN joined the Club in November of 2007. A Rochester (Henrietta) New York native and a Rush-Henrietta High School graduate (1976), he's married with two children, and has resided in Henrietta nearly all of his life. Flynn currently works as the overnight news anchor at WHAM-AM radio (since 2001). Altogether, he's been on the air in Rochester since 1975 through stints with area stations: WRHR, WSAY, WRTK, WXXI and WHAM. Flynn attended his first Amerks game at the age of seven during the 1965-66 season, as Rochester hosted the San Diego Sea Gulls at the War Memorial.
A veteran sports and general topic talk show host, Flynn also has been the play-by-play voice for baseball, basketball and football broadcasts. At WHAM, he spent three years as a sidekick for the WHAM Wine Show.
Visit this link! for a rundown of Flynn's radio career, feature scripts and other information. Flynn has produced over 1300 general topic and sports radio features. Nearly 500 have aired nationally and around the world via the Associated Press, National Public Radio and Armed Forces Radio networks. One of his very first features included Dusty Miller, the long-time Amerks Booster Club member and President.
His work has won four Edward R. Murrow Regional Awards (including a report about Women's Hockey), 11 New York State Associated Press Awards and one award from the New York State Broadcaster's Association. Two of his hour-long productions (Sounds of Silver- Baseball Sounds and Memories; Celebrating Rochester New York's Silver Stadium, 1929-1996... and When We Saved the Amerks 1972-73: The Story of Cherry, The Battleship and Hockey Revival in Rochester, New York) were accepted into their respective Hall of Fame libraries. In August of 2010, he will be inducted into the Frontier Field Walk of Fame, along with Amerk great Rory Fitzpatrick.
Flynn spent parts of four seasons with the Rochester Zeniths basketball team, (1979-83) broadcasting cable TV games, keeping statistics and producing media guides. 2010 marked his fifth year as historian/statistician and scoreboard operator for the Rochester RazorSharks basketball team at the Blue Cross Arena. Flynn has also written historical articles for the Rochester Red Wings (including the program cover story on Red Schoendienst in 2009), the Zeniths and 'Sharks. for publications and/or internet. Since 1986, he's covered the Ladies Professional Golf Association with radio features and on-course live reporting.
Over the years, his list of hockey radio interviewees includes Guy Lafleur, Mike Bossy, Darryl Sittler, Emile Francis, Pat Lafontaine and Domenic Hasek. Flynn has interviewed dozens of Amerks including greats Dick Gamble, Don Cherry, Bronco Horvath, Mike Keenan, Joe Crozier, Jody Gage and Al Arbour. And he shares a unique association with Cherry- they both spent part of their honeymoon taking in a Canadiens game at the famed Montreal Forum.
Athletically, Flynn played recreation softball for over 25 years and skated seven years for Lions Club and various recreation hockey leagues. He led his adult hockey league in scoring in back-to-back seasons playing center for the powerhouse Harold's Sporting Goods and RPB hockey teams of the late 1970s-early 1980s. Flynn can boast of scoring a game-winning goal at the Rochester War Memorial-- during a rec league game. For four seasons (2001-05) he played 19th century-rules "base ball" at the Genesee Country Village and Museum.
